This book is electrifying. Convicts on death row fight to the death gladiator style for mass entertainment. Adjei-Brenyah uses footnotes to describe real-life injustices in our mass incarceration system, which brings the narrative uncomfortably close to home, but he never loses sight of his characters or plot in his effort to maintain his allegory. It's a novel of great emotional depth and full of redemption. An important book, and it has rocketed to the top of my all-time favorites list.
I can't think of another writer with so many tools at their disposal. That's one thing, but to be able to use those tools to cut right to the most crucial questions makes Abdurraqib the best writer of our time. Using
memoir, cultural critique, history, and poetry, this book examines what it means to perform whether on stage or in your own personal space. This is a wild ride that will break your heart, but if you can hold on long enough, Aburraqib can build it back up.
In my summertime thriller binge, this one stood out by a mile. It's gothic and dark with a ton of twists and turns. It was so much fun! Kit, a young woman with a troubled past and the only one desperate enough to take the job, becomes a carer for Lenora Hope - a woman accused of murdering her entire family. Now wheelchair bound and unable to speak after a series of strokes, Lenora spends her days at Hope's End. But what really happened that fateful night? Kit will go out of her way to find out.
